John Albert Holmes, Jr. (1904-1962) earned his bachelor's degree (1929) at Tufts University, and taught at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania. He later returned to Tufts, joining the faculty of the Department of English as an Instructor in 1934. At Tufts, he advanced to a full professorship in 1960. He was honored with an honorary doctorate by the University in 1962.
